G21 chatted with Ms. Lawson about the Sugar Baby philosophy this week and this is what we discovered.
G21: For readers unfamiliar with the concept, please explain what you mean by "sugar baby."
LEIDRA LAWSON: A sugar baby is a woman that dates, usually, an older man, (but not necessarily so) who gives her financial help, by way of gifts or money. A sugar baby is simply a girlfriend that a boyfriend likes to spoil. Some people think that this a gold-digger situation but it usually isn't. It can be a mutually agreed upon relationship where no one is being used. Some of these relationships can last 3 years or more and even culminate with a marriage, in some cases.
G21: What prompted you to write this book?
LEIDRA LAWSON: I wrote Sugar Daddy 101 because a lot of women would ask me questions about how to meet wealthy men to help them pay for grad school, open a business, buy a car, etc. I guess I got the reputation, from when I went to my hair salon, as being the guru to ask for how to meet men. And I felt that to answer the ladies' questions needed more than just a sentence or two, or even more than an hour conversation. So, I was encouraged to put forth my years of experience into a comprehensive step-by-step guide.
G21: So give us a brief capsule of what you advise women to do to get in the Sugar Baby world, if you would. Do you change the way you dress, the people you associate with? What are the first steps you advise women to take to begin meeting the kind of men who are willing to invest in their futures?
LEIDRA LAWSON: Women that want to meet men need to do several things in order to meet the right type of sugar daddy. Dress is important. Conservative, well-fitting clothes are good. Wealthy men like classy women.
Sugar babies need to go where men will be, like charity events, exotic car shows, men's clothing stores, etc. And, more importantly, before all of this takes place, women need to come up with a plan for saving money and reaching their personal goals. When I do workshops and phone consultations some ladies tell me about acquiring lots of expensive cars, clothes, etc., and not saving money, investing in a business or other things that will benefit them in the future. Good planning will help that [keep] from happening.
And successful men like women that have other things going on besides just spending lots of money. I have seen some situations where it is appealing to a businessman that a woman has a great idea [for a] new business ... [An] idea that needs his mentoring and financial resources. What a woman is doing in her own life is her best start in attracting a man. She should be employed, in school, or in business for herself.
G21: We noticed that you'll be appearing on the "O'Reilly Factor," among other high-profile places, to talk about this book and your ideas. Why do you think this is such a timely topic?
LEIDRA LAWSON: I actually already appeared on "The O'Reilly Factor." In December, 2003. I found him to be one of my favorite interviews. I thought he would be hard on me but he [was] good to me.
in terms of this sugar daddy/sugar baby subject being so taboo and not talked about, that is not the case as much as you would think. Women have been doing this for years and there are men out there that embrace being a caretaker. When I do radio interviews, mothers and grandmothers will tell me that [they] have had a sugar daddy after a husband passed away or that perhaps they would not have gotten married and had kids right away, if they had it to do over again. And these are women in their 40s-70s! That shocked me because I thought that younger women would be interested in learning the techniques I teach. But, if you look at history, women have chosen mates that were able to provide shelter, food, and protection. That is simply how humans are wired. So this is not different really.
G21: Do you think that some women might be offended by your approach? Are they justified, in any way, if they are?
LEIDRA LAWSON: Some women are offended and I don't fault them for that. Some may say that they are independent feminists. This relationship choice is not for everyone because some may feel that this is covert. But it is not if you are up front and don't play games with a man and remember that he has feelings, too. Love can blossom in some cases. It has for me in my previous relationship.
Most modern women tend to very independent. But if they read the book they will see that I stress that women keep their independence and build a future for themselves. You should have an investment account, get an education, etc., and not just depend on a sugar daddy or anyone else for everything in your life.
I think that planning your personal life for having a relationship with a man that can assist you is a smart thing to do, especially in this bad economy. I actually cringe when I see these different talk shows that show some young 22 year old girl that is paying a guy's car note and he is living with her and has no job. And she is struggling to work 2 jobs and go to school. But, it seems that the trend in this society for girls to have men like this on their arms.
G21: What experiences in your own life led you to this philosophy?
LEIDRA LAWSON: I have always had boyfriends that loved to spoil me, so this sort of relationship is natural for me. In fact, my last boyfriend dated me for pretty much most of my adult life. We only stopped dating when I started promoting Sugar Daddy 101.
G21: If you had a teenage daughter, what life advice would you want to impart to her?
LEIDRA LAWSON: Hmmm. ... That is a good one. I don't think young girls should discuss things of a "sugar daddy nature," though some girls nowadays are very well versed with sex, drugs, and all kind of things they shouldn't be. Some are having babies at 13 or 14. But I guess I would tell them to stay away from boys, focus on education, because single parenthood in young girls is the number 1 cause of poverty in this country.
