An animated butterfly image. KATRINA & THE LOST CITY OF NEW ORLEANS by Rod Amis
New Orleans is the Lost City of America.

New Orleans has disappeared as surely as the lost city of Atlantis or the lost city of Pompeii, which former mayor Marc Morial and Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA.) have compared us to in their statements.

That New Orleans, the New Orleans I mean to tell you about, that will never, ever, exist again--that city of love, lust, death and sex--will never exist again.

A portion of the proceeds of this book will go to the New Orleans Hospitality Workers Fund. The cooks, servers and restaurant workers of New Orleans have provided fabulous times and memories for millions. Now we must remember them in their time of need.

G21 INTERVIEWS: MARC ROTHEMUND - Media Editor Brad Balfour talks with the German director of the acclaimed new film "Sophie Scholl" about his exploration of German history.

Photo of Brad Balfour.New York, NY, USA - In "Sophie Scholl," German actress Julia Jentsch plays a young woman who joined her brother and friends in the White Rose, an anti-Nazi student organization; they wrote several tracts that were circulated until they were caught and several members of the group, including Scholl, were executed. Of all them, Scholl had the least connection and could have saved herself when grilled by the Gestapo. Instead she went to her death proclaiming the virtues of their resistance. German director Marc Rothemund delved into her story for his dramatic feature debut (he had done TV films and two comedies), found new details about the story and focused his film on her final days.

G21: What motivated you to do this film?

MR: The only motivation I had was a person interested in finding out what happened in these last final day to this 21 year-old woman. It was just a personal interest. I started researching without being sure I was going to make a movie about it. You have to have a personal motivation for this topic and this character. I'm glad that this is one of the few movies that isn't always about the man in uniform and the blonde clichéd guys.

I think it's much better to share this time and identify with a person that was a quite normal young woman and to see this time through her eyes. Of course I could have chose one of the other members but she was the only woman. She was only [the] one distributing not writing them which meant she could have saved her life. She was the youngest. All the other members of the White Rose that were witnessing the murders of children [on the Eastern Front in Russia], and they reported it to her. It's also easier to identify with someone who was not witnessing by herself and to get the reports. She was a really interesting person.

And now this story of Sophie Scholl and the performance of Julia really touches hearts around the world. Its not just about German history. In South America, China, Korea and Japan, and they only overcame their military dictatorship say 30 years ago, and they admired this character because of it is a very international topic. It's a matter of civil courage and standing up against injustice, It touches hearts around the world. The recent screenings in New Jersey were unbelievable. They all hoped that the young Americans will see this kind of character. They weren't just talking about Germany. ... READ MORE

Text Graphic: 'The Cool Story'REACTION: On "Porn & Feminism by JOY WANJIKU

Nairobi, KENYA - I have read Barasa's article with keen interest and I must say the author has looked at the whole issue of pornography and feminism from a fresh angle. He gives great insight into the whole debate. However, there are some things I feel were not critically looked at or needed further exploration and I have taken the opportunity to highlight what I agreed and disagreed with in the article.

To begin with, I agree with the definition given by the author drawn from that of Andrea Dworkin, a feminist writer, and her lawyer compatriot, Catherine Mackinnon that pornography is a form of subordination of women. However, I think pornography is more than subordination; if you ask me, it is also a form of sexual perversion because

  • one, pornography does not only involve women; there is also male pornography.
  • Secondly, for the pornographers, I don't think they feel subordinated, on the contrary, they feel liberated and for them, it is a form of sexual pleasure.
They get a kick from looking sexy and arousing those feelings. So, for women who engage in pornography, it is a power thing, not subordination! They feel powerful to have men ogle at their bodies and want them and yet, in all probability, they can't have them (like in the case of magazines); a kind of femme fatale thing.

Secondly, Barasa argues that the 'girl' who walks out of a movie hall complaining that women are treated as sex objects, implies by her statement that a woman is a tangible object. Well, a woman is a tangible object, Barasa, although that is not the only thing that she is. I think we cannot separate the fact that a person is a physical, spiritual, and emotional being. In that sense, the you in one way is not tangible, it is an essence, like the soul; but the physical you is tangible and therefore, it is possible for that you, the physical one, to be treated as an object.

However, I do agree with the author that by focussing on physical pornography, we forget that there can be mental pornography. ... READ MORE

SIMIYU BARASA ON "THE DRINKING COUNTRY": ... It is common knowledge that most of our political leaders are always high on alcohol when they are not high on more sinister stuff. Read the newspapers; we have Members of Parliament being caught in dingy corners of Kisumu urinating on ATM machines after mistaking them for a urinal, drunk MPs punching each other, some caught in Red Light districts like K Street drunk and picking up commercial sex workers, as well as others being shot dead in some of the riskiest backstreet bars in this city - where even thugs never venture into unless they are plotting a major robbery. If Kennedy was in Kenya, he would have had a field day and still be leading a party, whether a drinking party or a political one.

So oblivious to the drinking menace are we that the popular pages in the entertainment magazines are photo spreads of which hip hop star has been snapped having blacked out in which joint, always with a semi-celebratory caption. ... READ MORE
