Parole Board

Photo of Margaret Carey.I have been an Independent Member of the Parole Board since 2003 and have recently been appointed for a second 3-year term.

The Parole Board is an independent body that protects the public by making risk assessments about prisoners to decide who may safely be released into the community and must remain in or be returned to custody. (www.paroleboard.gov.uk)

I have chaired the Board of the Restorative Justice Consortium for about six years. This is the infrastructure and information sharing body for people and organisations with a stake in restorative justice practices. I have also served as a member of the Board of the European Restorative Justice Forum.

Restorative Justice is a process whereby:

(i) All the parties with a stake in a particular conflict or offence come together to resolve collectively how to deal with the aftermath of the conflict or offence and its implications for the future, and;

(ii) Offenders have the opportunity to acknowledge the impact of what they have done and to make reparation and victims have the opportunity to have their harm or loss acknowledged and amends made." (www.restorativejustice.org.uk

Butler Trust

I am a member of the Awards Panel of the Butler Trust which recognises the outstanding efforts of people working in the Prison and Probation Services.

The Butler Trust is an independent charity which recognises excellence and innovation by people working with offenders in the UK. Through its Annual Award Scheme and Development Programme, the Trust helps to develop effective care for offenders by identifying and promoting excellence and innovation by Prison and Probation Service and criminal justice social work staff, contractors and volunteers; developing and disseminating best practice in the care and resettlement of offenders throughout the UK; providing professional and personal development opportunities for award-winning staff. (www.thebutlertrust.org.uk)

Bright

This charity finds new ways to tackle difficult problems. The current major initiative is 'Star Wards', a project to address the needs of people in acute psychiatric wards. I serve on its Management Committee. (www.brightplace.org.uk)

PREVIOUS WORK

Inside Out Trust

I founded the Inside Out Trust, a charity which sets up restorative justice based projects inside prisons throughout England and Wales, and was Director for ten years until July 2004. I was very proud to win the Guardian Jerwood Award for innovation and excellence in charities in 1996. This recognised the work of the charity and was an enormous help in raising our profile and affirming the value of our work. We later received the Longford Award for restorative work with prisoners. I was also awarded the MBE for founding IOT.

The Inside Out Trust develops prison projects based on restorative justice principles. Prisoners learn new skills which they willingly use to provide goods and services to disadvantaged people all over the world; new skills which improve their own employment prospects after release. Prisoners learn about the needs of other people and their ability to help them. They feel restored to the world outside and more positive about their place within it. (www.inside-out.org.uk)

G21 MIDEAST: G21 PODCAST: ALISON WEIR 04/28/2007: Alumnae Contributor ALISON WEIR is interviewed by podcaster TOM PARISH to debut our first podcast for Your World's Magazine.

Austin, TX, USA - ALISON WEIR is the Executive Director of If Americans Knew, a nonprofit organization that provides information on Israel-Palestine, with particular focus on media analysis of this issue.

Her essays and articles appear in CounterPunch, the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, and a number of anthologies, includin g THE NEW INTIFADA and CENSORED 2005. She speaks widely both nationally and internationally, including lectures at Harvard Law School, Columbia, Berkeley, Stanford, the Asia Media Summit in Kuala Lumpur, and two briefings on Capitol Hill.

She is currently working on a documentary, has produced six videos on Israel-Palestine, and is featured in a number of films made by other organizations, including "Off The Charts," by Alternate Focus.

Your World's Magazine has featured exclusive contributions by Ms. Weir over the last few years as well as reprints from other publications she has provided us. Two editions ago, we also featured the video, linked to above, which drew considerable comment. Those comments led us to choose her as the first subject of our new podcast series.

Our colleague, Tom Parish , for whom I act as podcast producer on various occasions, was nice enough to be the interviewer in this instance.

To listen or download to your iPod, click here.

As Tom points out in the interview, the subject matter is controversial but it also fits our modus operandi. As Alison points out, this is a core issue of our times.

We are proud to begin our podcast series on this topic.
