The Silona Bonewald Podcast

To read this article in Deutsch, Francaise, Italiano, Portuguese, Espanol, Korean, Japanese, Dutch, Greek, Chinese and Russian, copy and paste the complete URL ("http://www.g21.net/ls/podcasts.html") and enter it in the box after you click through.

[EDTOR'S NOTE: I first met Silona Bonewald while covering a "code-a-thon" - putting a group of programmers in a room for a weekend and having them write non-stop code for new Open Source programs - for OSTG (now known as SourceForge, Inc.) My interest was purely in doing my job and getting paid for filing another story as a freelancer.

Much to my surprise, I met a person who I now count among the few people I've encountered in my years as a journalist who I consider a true visionary. I think, as you listen to this podcast, you'll figure out why. Silona definitely has the gift of seeing over the horizon.

As you listen to her perspectives and hear about the multiple projects in which she's involved, you'll feel as I do, that this woman has tons of energy and lots to share with the community. Best of all, she's down-to-earth and has a great sense of humor.

As regular visitors here know, my partner Tom Parish and I share the duties in providing you these podcasts: I act as producer and he does the "on air" interviews. This is our second with Ms. Bonewald. I hope you enjoy it. - RA]

Photo of Silona Bonewald. Silona Bonewald is founder and Director of the League of Technical Voters in Austin, Texas.

Before this, in the mid 90's she started her own company, ElecTech that created specialized software for political campaigns, and ran a web consulting business where she was one of the first people to create websites for hire, and to successfully optimize her clients' websites for usability and top search engine ranking.

She has also worked in the gaming industry, creating high visibility web presences, content management systems, and large database back-end integrations. Silona volunteers for the ACLU and EFF on technology-based civil liberties issues, and has lobbied on various issues. The combination of her involvement in political activism, educational activism, psychometrics for gaming communities, lobbyist work, netizen activities and web design make her uniquely suited to envision the framework that will make the LoTV system all possible. She is also involved in the project Transparent Federal Budget.

Silona is involved in connecting a "smart mob" into the political process. She's doing this at events like Transparent Federal Budget

"I encourage you to check out the recent online Q&A on Gather.com. People had great questions about Sen. Bradley's ideas," she told G21. "A lot of the discussion focused on what we as citizens can actually do to affect politics, and how realistic it is to think that we can change the entrenched system we have now. Sen. Bradley emphasized the value of the internet in allowing politicians to connect directly to people, bypassing any biased media filters and allowing a two-way connection. He also encouraged people concerned about particular issues to use Meetup.com to connect with other engaged citizens and to hold their representatives accountable."

Sen. Bradley mentioned the Transparent Federal Budget project I've been working on, saying:

"[Citizen activism] will be easier in the next year or so, when we have established a transparent federal budget that is keyword accessible, so that you can type in breast cancer and find all the places in the federal budget that money is spent on breast cancer, linked to the floor debate in Congress that authorized and appropriated the money and linked further to how your representative voted and from whom he received contributions. "

In fact, the Open Standards discussion for the Transparent Federal Budget project is still on track to take place in June at Austin's LBJ Library. Sen. Bradley has been really involved in promoting the project and steering funding our way.
